With support from Care Nepal and UNICEF the RDF sucessesfuly conducted ( Ten VDCs with
support from Care Nepal since 2009 and Three VDC with support from UNICEF) since 2015 )
Wash and sanitation program In the rural communities of dhanusha district, That program was
improved access to drinking water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH) is crucial for health and
well-being. the activities was conducted in these areas to promote safe water use, proper hygiene
practices, and effective sanitation systems of activities was implemented below:
Hygiene Education and Promotion
Handwashing Campaigns: Conducting community-wide awareness programs on the
importance of handwashing with soap, especially before meals and after using the toilet.
School Hygiene Programs: Implementing hygiene education programs in schools,
providing handwashing stations, and promoting good practices among children.
Distribution of Hygiene Kits: Distributing hygiene kits (soaps, sanitary pads, and
disinfectants) to households, particularly focusing on women and school-going girls.
Sanitation Infrastructure Development
Construction of Toilets: Building household and community toilets with a focus on low-
cost, eco-friendly designs such as pit latrines or pour-flush toilets.
Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS): Using CLTS approaches to mobilize
communities to stop open defecation and build their own toilets, fostering a sense of
ownership.
Solid Waste Management: Training communities on solid waste segregation, composting,
and proper waste disposal practices to keep the environment clean.
Behavior Change Communication
Community Workshops and Campaigns: Conducted workshops on water, sanitation, and
hygiene (WASH) practices through storytelling and local language posters.
Door-to-Door Awareness: Conducted activities on engaging local volunteers and health
workers to visit homes and educate families about safe water use, hygiene practices, and
proper sanitation.
Media Outreach: Used local radio and social platforms to spread messages about clean
water, hygiene, and sanitation practices in local languages.
Capacity Building and Training
Conducted WASH orientation for Local Leaders: Conducted orientation to local
community leaders, health workers, and teachers on WASH principles to enable them to
become advocates and trainers within their communities.
Formation of Water and Sanitation Committees: Established local water and sanitation
committees to manage water resources, monitor sanitation facilities, and ensure regular
maintenance.
Technical Training for Local Entrepreneurs: Provided technical skills to local
entrepreneurs for the construction and maintenance of WASH infrastructure like toilets,
water tanks, and filtration systems.
Improved Sanitation in Public Spaces
Hygienic Practices in Public Facilities: Encouraged proper cleaning and maintenance of
public sanitation facilities by training to local service providers and ensuring the availability of
water and cleaning supplies.
Collaborations with Government and NGOs
Partnership with drinking water and sanitation division office of Nepal government and Local
Authorities: Collaborated with local governments to align WASH activities with national
standards and policies, ensuring resources and support were available.
CBO-Led Initiatives: Conducted activities incollaboration with CBOs to implement water,
sanitation, and hygiene programs, including technical assistance and awareness programs.
Monitoring and Evaluation
WASH Monitoring Systems: Established systems to monitor water quality, sanitation facility
usage, and hygiene practices through community participation. |
